Giani Justo Freitas’s new trial, accused of killing civil engineer Silvia Raquel Mota in 2014, was postponed again by the Acre Justice. The crime occurred in Rio Branco, where the victim’s body was found inside a water tank in the house where she lived with her then husband. Since then, the case has been going on for almost eleven years without a definitive conclusion.

Freitas was sentenced in 2019 to 19 years in prison for the murder of his ex-wife, with a sentence to be served in a closed regime. Subsequently, the State Public Prosecution Service appealed the sentence, requesting an increase in the sentence for understanding that there was planning and coldness in the execution of the crime. The State Court of Justice partially complied with the appeal and raised the sentence to more than 24 years, although it rejected the request for the defendant to begin to serve the sentence immediately.
However, in November 2023, the Supreme Court (STJ) accepted a defense appeal and annulled the previous trial. The argument was the violation of the right of defense, since two witnesses pointed out by the lawyers of Freitas were not heard in the original jury. The decision was signed by Minister Rogério Schietti, who determined a new trial.

The new session was initially scheduled for April this year by the 2nd Court of the Jury Court and Military Audit of Rio Branco. Then the trial was rescheduled for May 26. However, once again, the hearing has been canceled, and so far there is no new date set for the popular jury.
During the progress of the process, Freitas remained free, although he was forced to comply with precautionary measures, such as regularly presenting to court. These demands were suspended on the 20th.
