Russian Minister Lavrov criticizes German plans to strengthen the army, recalls the war periods of the 20th century.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Wednesday marked Germany’s plans to create a “strongest” army in Europe as “very disturbing”, commemorating wars from the 20th century. According to the AFP report, TASR reports this.
“The recent statements of the German office of Mr. (Friedrich) Merza, who promised to turn Germany again to the European leader in (area) of the army … Many immediately reminded many periods of the previous century when Germany became a leading military force twice and how many problems caused,” Lavrov said.
Germany is planning a change
The Conservative Chancellor joined the office on May 6 and pledged to continue strongly supporting Ukraine in cooperation with Paris, London and Warsaw, recalls AFP. At the same time, it promotes an increase in German defense spending.
Merz said on Thursday that Russia is threatening security in Europe. He said this during a visit to Lithuania on the occasion of the creation of the first permanent foreign military unit of Germany since the Second World War.
Greeding up in Berlin
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyj arrived in Berlin on Wednesday. A green visit will focus on “Germany’s support for Ukraine in an effort to ensure a ceasefire” with Russia in more than three years of war, a spokesman for the Federal Government said in a statement. It is expected that both leaders will also talk about the imposition of other sanctions of the European Union on Russia with regard to the lack of progress towards ceasefire or possible peace negotiations.
