Spotify paid a record of $ 1.6 billion in royalties to Brazilian artists in 2024

The royalties paid by Spotify () to Brazilian artists last year increased 31% compared to 2023, totaling a record of $ 1.6 billion, and more than 70% was generated by independent artists or stamps, according to data from the music streaming platform released on Wednesday (28).

The amount represents less than 3% of the globally generated generated in 2024, when Spotify paid $ 10 billion to the music industry, but it is a record level for the company in Brazil.

The executive added that the revenue of the Brazilian phonographic market as a whole rose 21.7% in 2024, citing data from the International Federation of Phonographic Industry (IFPI).

“When you look only at streaming, it was a growth of 22.5% (…) it’s very positive to see that not only are we growing up and beating record behind a record, but we are pulling up the industry’s growth,” he said.

The music market in Brazil won R $ 3.5 billion in 2024, pulled by streaming, which accounted for almost 90% of revenues in the sector (R $ 3.05 billion), according to a report by PRO-MASIC, representative of the country’s main record labels and producers.

Spotify has 268 million subscribers worldwide, 90% of its revenue from these signatures and the rest of ads.

Latin America accounts for about 23% of global subscribers, said the Swedish company, which does not reveal the number of paying users in Brazil, but says it has seen “tremendous growth” in markets such as India, Brazil, Mexico and Nigeria.

The list of Brazilian artists most heard at Spotify in 2024 was led by the duo Henrique & Juliano, followed by MC Ryan SP and Ana Castela, potentially the largest royalties generators in the period, although Spotify does not discriminate the amounts paid for each of the rights holders, distributors or musical publishers.

“In the end, the most heard artists are the ones that generate the most royalties within the platform,” said Alzugir, stressing that, despite this, most of the royalties were generated by independent Brazilian artists.

The total amount of Royalties of R $ 1.6 billion – or about R $ 1.1 billion for independent artists and seals – paid last year in Brazil includes reproductions in both the country and abroad, but according to the Brazilian public has strongly consumed local productions.

As an example, she mentioned that when she specifically analyzes the royalties generated by listeners within Brazil, about 60% of this value goes to Brazilian rights holders.

“Brazil is one of the few markets in the world that has such a high local music consumption,” he said. “Most of the royalties we pass, which are generated within the platform on Spotify, are for Brazilian artists.”
