Russia will withdraw its troops from the Moldova separatist region of Transnistria if you can negotiate a durable agreement between Gossau and Tiráspol, the Russian ambassador to Moldova, Oleg Ozerov, told Ria Novosti.
The Russian diplomat announced that there have already been previous conversations about the withdrawal of Russian Transnistria troops and assured that Moscow is not reluctant to bring home to the peace forces of the European country, as published by the media .
Ozerov suggested that the countries involved will continue negotiations in the 5+2 format, stagnant in 2019. The objective is that Moldova and the separatist region of Transnistria, with the mediation of Russia, Ukraine and the OSCE, negotiate a durable peace agreement, with the United States and the EU as observers.
However, the ambassador emphasizes that until a lasting peace is achieved, the Russian troops will remain in Transnistria, since they consider that they are the main guarantee that the conflict between Moldova and the separatist region of Transnistria, which was frozen by a high fire in 1992, does not resume.
Transnistria, whose population is mostly Russian and Ukrainian, has gained prominence in recent months after the outbreak of war in Ukraine for its links with Russia and its important geostrategic position. The area has been used to a greater extent by Moscow to exert pressure on the Moldova government.
