USA announce restriction of visas to authorities who “censor Americans”

The United States government announced on Wednesday (28) a new foreign policy guideline restricting entry into the country of foreigners accused of “censoring US citizens.”

The measure, released by the State Department under the management of Donald Trump, does not nominally cite Brazilian authorities, but has as its background cloth of the Allied pressures of former President Jair Bolsonaro to punish Minister Alexandre de Moraes of the Supreme Court (STF).

The expectation between pockets is that the measure is one, based on the so -called magnitsky law, which allows the blockade of goods and the freezing of assets of individuals accused of violating human rights. A decree with this goal would already be ready and awaiting only Trump’s signature.

If applied, the sanction via Magnitsky Law could ban Moraes from entering the US, as well as taking you to the list of OFAC (Foreign Asset Control Office), an American Treasury body responsible for economic sanctions. As a result, he would be prevented from transactions with US financial institutions and would have blocked assets.

The interim secretary of state, Marco Rubio, justified the new guideline stating that “it is unacceptable for foreign authorities to issue arrest warrants against US citizens or residents for posts made on American soil.” Not to mention Brazil, Rubio criticized governments that pressures platforms such as X (formerly) to adopt global moderation policies that go beyond their jurisdiction.

List may include members of PGR, PF and STF

Sources linked to the State Department informed Bolsonaro allies that the restriction of visas should reach a group of Brazilian authorities, including the Attorney General, Paulo Gonet, and Federal Police Delegate Fabio Schor, as well as other Supreme Ministers, except Kassio Nunes Marques, André Mendonça and Luiz Fux.

The announcement also has international impact potential and may affect European authorities involved in measures that the US consider violating freedom of expression.

Since January, with Trump’s inauguration, licensed deputy Eduardo Bolsonaro (PL-SP) has intensified his performance with the Republican government to pressure for sanctions against Moraes. The parliamentarian argues that decisions of the STF minister violate freedom of expression, reaching both technology companies and Rumble, and people like blogger Allan dos Santos, who is a fugitive in the US.

Last week, Rubio himself said at an audience at the US Congress that there is a “great possibility” of sanction to Moraes, which raised the warning of the Planalto Palace. For the Lula administration, the initiative would be an attack on Brazilian sovereignty.
