There is an appropriate balance of nutrients, in particular nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. These three elements are crucial for the growth, development of roots and the general condition of the lawn. Instead of reaching for chemical mixtures, we can use the natural sources of those ingredients that are not only cheaper, but also safer for the environment.

One of such “kitchen” fertilizers is … water after cooking eggs! Yes, it’s not a joke! Egg shells are rich in calcium, which strengthens the cell walls of plants, improves their resistance to diseases and pests and stimulates root growth. Water after cooking eggs, especially if we were ready without salt, contains dissolved calcium, which is easily absorbed by the grass. After cooling, just water the lawn, preferably early in the morning or late afternoon to avoid sunburn.

Another surprising but effective fertilizer is the infusion of nettles. Nettle is a real treasury of nitrogen, potassium, iron and other microelements that are necessary for healthy grass growth. Preparation of the infusion is simple: just pour fresh or dried nettle with water and leave for a few days until fermentation. The resulting liquid should be diluted with water in a 1:10 ratio and used for watering the lawn. It not only nourishes the grass, but also strengthens its resistance to diseases and pests.

Let’s also remember about the compost. It is a natural fertilizer that contains a wealth of nutrients and microorganisms that improve the soil structure and stimulate plant growth. Compost can be prepared ourselves from organic remains from the kitchen and garden, such as vegetable peelings, coffee grounds, cut grass, leaves and twigs. The compost can be scattered on the lawn before the rain or use it to prepare a “compost tea”, which we will then water the lawn.

By using unusual, but natural, we can enjoy a thick, green and healthy lawn throughout the season. Remember, however, that the key to success is regularity and moderation. Let’s not overdo it with the amount of fertilizer, because the excess of nutrients can be harmful to the grass. Let’s observe our lawn and react to its needs, and will certainly repay us with a beautiful look.
