Ambassador Marcos Castroto de Azambuja died on Wednesday (28.MAI.2025) at 90 years. He joined the Rio Branco Institute in 1956 and began his diplomatic career shortly after.
It served in Brazil’s mission in New York (1959-1963) and Brazil embassies in Mexico (1963-1966), London (1969-1972) and Buenos Aires (1972-1973). In 1978, he was promoted to 1st class minister, having headed the Brazilian delegation to disarmament and human rights affairs in Geneva (1989-1990). He was Brazilian Ambassador in Argentina (1992-1997) and France (1997-2003).
At Itamaraty, Azambuja performed the role of secretary general (1990-1992), the 2nd most important position in the Hierarchy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
He was part of the team of government agencies such as CIRM (Interministerial Commission for Sea Resources), the Brazilian Commission of Space Activities) and the CDDPH (Council for the Defense of Human Rights).
He was coordinator of the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development, an event that was held in 1992 in Rio.
Marcos Azambuja reconciled his diplomatic career with the activity as a writer and academic. He was part of the IHGB (Brazilian Historical and Geographic Institute) staff, IPHAN (Institute of National Historical and Artistic Heritage) and Cebri (Brazilian Council of Foreign Relations).
