The International Atomic Energy Agency (OIEA) has warned that the situation at the Zaporiyia nuclear power plant, located in eastern Ukraine and considered the largest in Europe, remains “extremely fragile”, since it depends on a single exterior source that is key to guaranteeing basic functions and ultimately avoiding an accident. The last support line was disconnected on May 7 and the OIEA acknowledges that “it is not clear” when it will be active again. The situation of the central, taken by the Russian forces, has been a reason for constant concern since the beginning of the conflict, especially at the time when the facilities have been completely disconnected from the external network-it has already happened eight times. The general director of the agency, Rafael Grossi, who plans to travel next week to Ukraine and Russia within its round of contacts with both countries, recalled that, regardless of whether the central one is or not operational, reactors and fuel require a “continuous” cooling process, which requires electricity.
