"Hawaii Prince": Portuguese who says he is a descendant of D. Afonso Henriques and who uses title to raise funds

Alfredo Côrte-Real presents himself as “Hawaii Prince” and has used the title in social events, balls and fundraising in Portugal. Part of the donations collected has been delivered to a foundation managed by himself, and at least one of these initiatives happened without authorization from the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

It claims to be a descendant of D. Afonso Henriques and Portuguese navigators and says he can name his ancestors until 1331 BC. However, witnesses and experts heard by They dispute the allegations and claim that many people descend from historical figures without claiming titles. It also claims to have studied in Oxford and be part of military and religious orders.

For years, Alfredo lived in the monastery of São Salvador de Palme, a historic property in Barcelos. He inherited a fifth of the monastery, supposedly at the will of an aunt, but the other heirs dispute the will, claiming forgery. A document, not authenticated by a notary, contains two signatures that do not coincide with that of the aunt. Nevertheless, the family respected the will at an early stage, but then required the return of the 80,000 euros received, which Alfredo eventually paid.

His presence on site ended in a controversial way: neighbors and local authorities report animal abuse, including horses and dogs left to starve. GNR received several complaints.

In 2023, Alfredo married Idony Punahele, who presents himself as heiress of the extinct Hawaiian monarchy. The marriage took place at Santa Maria da Feira Castle, with the support of the City Council. The “Hawaii Royal House” is contested by other families who say they do not recognize the couple’s legitimacy.

The couple have been invited to gala events in Portugal, including fashion shows, where they performed as members of royalty. The initially skeptical organizers and designers eventually accepted the presence of the “princes” for the exoticism of the title.

Alfredo Côrte-Real has also promoted events of raising Funds in the name of the so-called “Hawaii Royal House”, presenting itself as “Prince Alfredo”. Part of the funds collected in these events is channeled to a foundation that manages it. PLess less of the annuals held in Portugal was not authorized by the Ministry of Internal Affairs, as required by law.
