The City Hall has announced a series of measures by anticipating the eventual approval by the Constitutional Amendment Congress that gives police power to the Metropolitan Civil Guards (GCMS).
This Wednesday (28), announced the acquisition of a thousand guns for the custody and the creation of a municipal public security fund, to receive federal funds for the city.
“Our part is done. We have the Municipal Security Plan finished, the fund created, the projects in the House and an expanding staff. Manaus is ready to turn its guard into municipal police as soon as the law is sanctioned,” said Almeida.
On Tuesday (27), the Senate unanimously approved the amendment that recognizes the municipal guards as part of the National Security System. The text now goes to the House of Representatives.
The package also includes the beginning of the training course for 150 guards, in addition to the forecast of a new public tender with 500 vacancies for 2026.
The mayor’s movement comes in the wake of a wave of initiatives in Brazil. In São Paulo, the measure was barred by the court.
