A video shared on social networks showed the dramatic moment when the glacier partially collapsed, creating a huge cloud that covered part of the mountain while rocks and debris cascading towards the village of Blatten.
Reuters was able to verify the location independently. The date the video was filmed was verified by the original file data.
Stephane Ganzer, a local authority, told the Swiss media that about 90% of the village was covered by the landslide.
Earlier this month, the imminent risk of an avalanche of rock and ice had forced the more than 300 inhabitants in the city of Blatten leaving their home.
Buildings and infrastructure of the site were hit by the landslide of rocks, authorities said.
