Although the separation of waste in Slovakia has been operating for several years, research has shown that many Slovaks are still making mistakes in its correct sorting. The problem is, for example, packaging from meat and fish. Where exactly to throw them away?
Waste Sorting in Slovakia: Basic rules
The main principle of the waste sorting system says that the raw materials suitable for further processing should be separated from waste that is not recyclable. Sorted raw materials are:
- metals and plastics,
- papier,
- glass packaging,
- textile,
- biodegradable waste.
From 1 January 2025 A new legislation has entered into force in Slovakia, which imposes on cities and municipalities to ensure separate collection of textiles as part of municipal waste. Used clothing, bed linen, towels, curtains, rags or other unnecessary textiles must be taken to the nearest collection yard, respectively. municipalities are obliged to secure Introduction and execution of sorted collection of municipal waste for textiles. This is the obligation introduced by European legislation and which is valid throughout Slovakia.
Nevertheless, the Slovaks still make the most of the sorting of plastics and metals – especially when it comes to contaminated packaging from dairy products, meat or fish. So where to properly throw the packaging from the meat?
Where to throw away the packaging from the meat?
The one in which the meat container belongs to the meat depends mainly on what material it is made of.
- If it is a multi -layer packaging that cannot be separated, it belongs to the mixed waste container. However, it is always best to follow the symbol on the packaging – manufacturers place instructions for proper sorting.
- Plastic meat packaging belongs to a yellow plastic container and metals. However, they should be clean and certainly without meat residues – They belong to a black container for mixed waste.
- Polluted polystyrene packaging that are not suitable for recycling should be thrown into the mixed waste (black container).
