Between the thousand remedies of tradition and the new fashions of do-it-yourself gardening, there is one that often returns to the speeches of fans: to use banana skins to grow lemons better. Strange? Maybe yes. Still, those who trial it rarely go back. It is said that a simple peel is enough to give the plant that more something. But does it really work so easily? There are those who have discovered it by chance and now they don’t throw anything anymore, those who follow the advice of the grandmother and those who have read it online. After all, what does it cost to try? The skins are produced every day and instead of ending up in the bucket, they can turn into a small help for our citrus fruits.

And then, let’s face it: in a period when you try to recover, recycle and reduce waste, this gesture also takes on a greater meaning. It is not just a matter of gardening, but a way of seeing things with different eyes. And it is precisely with a peel that you can start.

The hidden force in the skins for lemons

To see them there, on the kitchen table, they seem useless. And instead inside a banana peel is hiding a treasure: potassium, magnesium, phosphorus, soccerand even a bit of nitrogen. All elements of which the plants, especially lemons, must be tempted. There is no need to complicate your life: just cool them close to the plant and let them take their course. Lemons are notoriously demanding. They want light, water at the right point, and nourishing soil. With the skins, they offer them a constant dose of natural energy, without resorting to chemicals. Some say that after a few weeks there are differences: more lucid leaves, flowers that sprout more numerous, and fruits that have an intense, almost unexpected perfume.

In addition, there are those who say that the smell of decomposition peels keep certain annoying insects away. Truth or suggestion? It matters little, if the result is a happier plant. And in the garden, you know, a little magic always serves.

The most effective methods to use them

There are no technical knowledge or special tools. Whatever the available space – a sunny terrace or a small green corner – you can start immediately. Just take the habit. Two peels per week? Better than nothing. And if every now and then you forget, not bad: nature also has its times. Observing how the plant reacts is already part of the experiment:

  • Break them and interrave them: a classic. The skins must be cut coarsely and slipped into the ground near the roots. Nothing simpler.
  • Dry them and pulverize them: for the most precise. Once dry, they can chop and use in small doses.
  • Banana infusion: a small ritual. Boil the skins in the water, let cool and then use the liquid to wet the plant. An almost Zen gesture.
  • Compost: for those who have a little more space. Add to other waste, the skins enrich the compost of fundamental minerals.

The only real rule? Constance. Because nothing happens in one day, but after a few weeks the plants begin to “speak” on their own.

Why do banana peels for lemons?

There is a reason if this trick is so loved by those who cultivate lemons. These plants, in addition to being splendid to see, are among the most hungry in the garden. They have roots that develop just below the surface, so they immediately absorb everything that happens in the shot.

Banana skins, which slowly release nutrients, seem to be made on purpose for them. And then, in some cases, it seems that they also improve the vitality of the soil itself. There are those who speak of a sort of “micromondo” that is created around the decomposition: good bacteria, useful organisms, all an invisible life that works for the well -being of the plant.

Whether it is science or simple experience, little changes. What matters is that it works. And when it works, it is hardly forgotten.

The next time you eat a banana, better stop a second before throwing the peel away.
