France plans to ban smoking on beaches, parks, outdoor areas of schools and other places from July to protect children, the government said.
The prohibition, which follows similar measures in one, will exempt the terraces of coffees and will not apply to electronic cigarettes.
“Where there are children, tobacco should disappear,” said Minister of Health and family, Catherine Vautrin, in an interview with the newspaper Ouest France on Thursday night (29).
“From July 1, beaches, parks and public gardens, school areas, bus stops and sports facilities will be free of smoke throughout France. Therefore, smoking will be prohibited in these places to protect our children.”
Vautrin stated that smoke kills about 200 people every day in the country.
Smoking in France has reached historically low levels, according to a report published this month by the French Observatory of Drugs and Addition Trends.
The survey found that just under a quarter of people between 18 and 75 years smoked daily, the lowest rate since the agency began to maintain records in the late 1990s.
