France has taken a significant step in the protection of children against the harmful effects of smoking by implementing new restrictions on smoking in public places. From July 1st, smoking will be prohibited in outdoor areas where there are minors, such as beaches, parks, school areas, road stations and sports facilities. Health Minister and families, Catherine Vautrin, emphasized the importance of the measure by stating that “where there are children, tobacco must disappear.” To ensure compliance with the new rule, a fine of 135 euros was stipulated, approximately R $ 867, for violators.

This new legislation expands existing restrictions, which previously applied only to maternal and primary schools, now also extending to schools and high schools. The main objective is to prevent students from being exposed to the habit of smoking at the entrance or exit of educational establishments. However, legislation does not apply to coffees and does not restrict the use of electronic cigarettes in these spaces. According to French government data, smoking is responsible for 75,000 annual deaths in the country.
