Leila* comes too late on this day of school in April 2023. Only after the ringing does the big girl burst with the narrow face, long eyelashes and the Baggy jeans into the classroom of the Carinthian middle school. The looks of their classmates: inside and the teacher fall on them. “They all looked at me strange,” recalls the then 13-year-old. Not because Leila is too late, but because of the headscarf. Yesterday it wasn’t about Leila’s head. From one day to the next she sits in class with a headscarf.
