‘If it were Brazilian, I would be concerned about the United States’

Former New York mayor, Bill of Blasio, said he was worrying about pressure from the United States to classify Brazilian criminal organizations as terrorists. Blasio said the measure can be used for “harmful political goals.”

In a meeting with the Lula administration this month, representatives of the US government suggested that Brazil consider the first command of the capital (CCP) and the Red Command (CV) as terrorist organizations.

The Blasio Declaration was given on the afternoon of Thursday (29), during the last day of the 2nd International Seminar on Public Security, Human Rights and Democracy. Organized by the Institute for Reform of State and Company Relations (Iree), in partnership with IDP, the event gathered in São Paulo governors, parliamentarians and civil society members over four days.

Blasio said he understood the concern of Latin American governments when they see the United States “intruding on the issues of their own countries.”

“Is it possible for Trump to use this classification of terrorist groups for harmful political goals in Brazil? It is possible. If anyone thinks, it is because they are not paying attention. If I were Brazilian, they would be concerned about the United States using something that should be a legal tool to combat terrorism and turn it into a political tool,” he said.

By framing Brazilian factions as terrorists, Donald Trump’s government could send prisoners who belong to these groups in the US to the arrest of Cecot, the largest in Latin America and intended to house terrorists. The prison is located in El Salvador and was inaugurated in 2022.

At the meeting with the technical area of the Ministry of Justice and Itamaraty, the Brazilian government was opposed to the proposal. The claim is that, by Brazilian law, it would be necessary for these organizations to have motivation of religion or race to fit into the legal concept of terrorism.
