Debt interest spending totaled R $ 928.4 billion in 12 months, up 19.6% compared to April 2024

The consolidated public sector – formed by Union, states, municipalities and state – registered nominal deficit of R $ 934.4 billion in the accumulated 12 months until April. According to data released in the report “Tax statistics(Central Bank), the negative balance of public accounts. Here is the statement (PDF – 333 kB).

The nominal deficit fell 1.5% compared to the previous month and retreated 10.4% compared to the negative balance of April 2024, when it totaled R $ 1.04 trillion.

Debt interest expense is the main reason for the annual deficit of R $ 934.4 billion. From 12 months to April, Brazil spent R $ 928.4 billion on the figure. The amount decreased 0.7% compared to March (R $ 935.0 billion), but rose 19.6% compared to April 2024 (R $ 776.3 billion).

Primary result

The consolidated public sector recorded primary deficit – which is the balance of revenues and expenses, excluding the debt interest spending – R $ 6.01 billion in the accumulated 12 months. This negative balance was lower than that registered in March (R $ 13.47 billion) and April 2024 (R $ 266.51 billion).

The primary deficit accumulated in 12 months until April fell 55.4% in March and 97.7% compared to the amount recorded 1 year ago.

According to BC data, the negative balance of R $ 6.0 billion was the smallest in almost 2 years. In May 2023, the consolidated public sector registered surplus of R $ 39.0 billion
