NYT: Trump government sent a letter to Moraes with criticism of the Rumble blockade

The US Department of Justice sent a letter to the Supreme Court Minister Alexandre de Moraes in response to court decisions that resulted in the blockade of US social networks in Brazil, such as Rumble.

The information was released by The New York Times, which claimed to have had access to the content of the document.

According to the newspaper, the US government directly criticized Moraes’ orders, stating that although it can apply Brazilian laws in the digital environment, it would not have the authority to determine compliance with court orders by US -based companies.

The central target of the rebuke was, determined by Moraes in February this year, after the company fails to comply with a series of decisions, such as the removal of the profile of journalist Allan dos Santos, the blockade of financial transfers made to him and the appointment of a legal representative of the company in the country.

The social network came to the air in February, but was later suspended in the midst of legal controversy. The company claims that there were no representatives with legal authority in Brazil and even resorted to American courts, accusing Moraes of censorship.

The US court has decided that it is not required to comply with the Brazilian minister’s orders.

The Justice Department letter comes at a time when Donald Trump’s government has intensified criticism of Moraes’s performance.

In addition to the document, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said in a hearing in the US Congress that sanctions against the Brazilian minister are under analysis and there is.

It is also expected by parliamentarians and allies of former President Jair Bolsonaro that the US government signs a decree applying the so-called magnitsky law, which provides punishments to people involved in human rights violations and corruption.

If confirmed, Moraes could have a visa suspended, as well as sanctions from the Treasury Department, such as the blockade of goods in US territory.

A CNN He contacted the office of Minister Alexandre de Moraes, but obtained no response until the publication of the report.

Pinned to Moraes

In the midst of the repercussion, Rumble CEO Chris Pavlovski made a publication on social network X on Wednesday (28), wondering if it would not be time for the platform to return to Brazil, in a possible allusion to the ongoing court disputes.

RUMBLE BLOCK

The platform was blocked in Brazil on February 21, after decision by Moraes.

“I determine the immediate, complete and integral suspension of the functioning of the Rumble Inc. In the national territory, until all court orders, made in the present case – including the payment of fines -, being fulfilled and the individual or legal entity representing in the national territory,” said Moraes in the decision.

For the minister, the video platform has committed “repeated, conscious and volunteer non -compliance with court orders, as well as attempting to submit to the Brazilian legal system and judiciary”.
