The US embassy in Brazil updated its security recommendations for US citizens traveling to the country, warning of the risk of kidnapping.
The statement, published in Portuguese on the agency’s official page, is awarded to the US State Department.

In the text, the embassy points out that organized crime and gang activities are “widespread” in Brazil, especially linked to recreational drug trafficking.

Among the guidelines is the recommendation for Americans to avoid slums, even on guided tours, and do not move to certain administrative regions of the Federal District without authorization, due to increased violence.
In addition, the warning mentions that violent crimes such as murders, armed theft and vehicle thefts can occur in urban areas at any time of day or night.
The embassy also draws attention to frequent cases of physical aggression using sedatives and drugs in beverage, especially in bars and through dating applications, aiming at foreigners.

To ensure safety, the embassy recommends that American tourists prepare emergency plans, avoid displaying valuables such as watches and jewelry, and maintaining constant communication with family members.
The agency also advises US government officials to avoid the use of municipal buses, especially at night, due to the risk of theft and aggression.
