Gardening is a popular pastime, in some households an important source of food and finance. But not everyone has gardens, balconies or terraces where something could be grown at least in small. But it is also on the window sill, and therefore at any time of the year!
You can also garden on the window sill
Don’t have a garden and a balcony is small, full of shops or none? Even on window sills can be grown. Do you want to try it?
In any case, you can have a herbal window sill. Or the whole garden even in a very small space. Do not forget that when it comes to window sills where you grow, you do not have to clamp only on a single board of the window sill. You can create a system of many shelves behind the window that will reach a height. Or it is possible to hang the pots in the window and use the entire size of the window.
You can even grow in small windows, thanks to several floors of pots hung in the growing station enlightened by its own reflector. It is a more energy -intensive way of growing, but for nutritional microgreens and other vegetables can definitely come in handy.
How to do it? The author of this contribution from the YouTube channel Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, has a puff.
Microgreens and green onion
The amazing source of nutritional substances is the so -called microgreens. These are basically the sprouts of different plants that may not achieve more than just a few centimeters. You can reap them continuously after 7 to 14 days or at once and add them to cold meals.
Typical microgreens include popular cress, mustard, beetroot, sunflower, but also many others. The big advantage is not only that you get the necessary nutritional substances for health, but also that they do not take up much space and the harvest will take place in just a few days. You can change microgreens and try new tastes.
Another classic home variation for growing on the window sill or anywhere in the kitchen can be the placement of onions or garlic in the water so that the onion has moisture but is not completely submerged. In this way, you will be built to grow green parts, and then you can harvest them as a green onion. Also, green parts of garlic can be harvested in this way, they are more spicy and certainly for them you will find tasty use.
You can have tomatoes, salads and peas on the window sill
But let’s go to real cultivation or such a vessel, substrate, seeds and then watering, and especially the time to germinate the seeds from the seeds and then grow proper plants. However, it is true that you can also buy pre -grown seedlings in horticulture for growing on the window sill.
The advantage is also that as long as you grow on the inner window sill, you do not have to worry about temperatures. Typical room temperatures will definitely be high enough and suitable for growing all types of vegetables, even very thermophilic.
The window sill is perfect for growing leafy vegetables. These can be different types of salads, but also arugula, rocet, lamb’s lettuce or spinach.
However, other typical vegetables, which are popular among all gardeners, can also be grown on the window sill. These are mainly tomatoes, cucumbers or peppers.
Although it is possible to grow these popular species on the window sill, you prefer to choose such variants or varieties that are lower, shrubs. Tomatoes and especially cucumbers can reach up to several meters, in which case the whole window would overshadow. Which is probably possible, but not downright desirable. Nice, compact busy varieties of tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers are suitable for growing in small areas such as window sills or balcony. In addition, they will grow well even without support.
What about other vegetables? For example, you can grow radishes. Unfortunately, they are best suited from root vegetables, because they do not need to take root deep. However, if you find short and chubby carrot variants, you can also try to grow them.
On the window sill you can also have a sweet peas or peas pods that are great for salads, but count on some support that you will have to offer pins with stems.
