The Government of the Federal District keeps closed, for visitation, the Brasilia Zoo. The situation should follow this until the investigation is completed on the cause of the death of two wild birds found within the zoo.

. The birds found dead are not part of the zoo squad. This Thursday (29), cars of employees that went to the scene underwent disinfection.

The response to the cause of death is expected to leave within 72 hours, a deadline started yesterday, when biological material was sent to a Map (Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock) laboratory of Campinas (SP), for analysis of possible cases of aviary flu.

“It is important to clarify that these birds are free-life, that is, they are not part of the Zoo’s squad, but circulate around the place due to the natural supply of shelter, water and food,” said the DF government on Wednesday (28). “The Brasilia Zoo constantly monitors the health of all its animals and maintains rigorous research protocols in death cases.”

According to the statement, there is no other suspicious case registered so far, either between free living animals or other birds in the Federal District. “Seagr-DF is the body responsible for animal health in the DF and will conduct the entire investigation, following the national protocols developed by the map,” he said.

So far, the H5N1 virus, from Avian flu, has only been confirmed in a commercial farm of Montenegro (RS) and two wild animals from the Rio Grande do Sul zoo.

At the time of publication of this report, the map inspection panel on “Bird and Nervous Syndrome of the birds” pointed out that nine cases are under investigation in different regions of the country, including the case of the Federal District.

(OMSA) has changed its understanding of the reach of the outbreak of avian influenza in Brazil and has officially recognized that the case is restricted to the region of Montenegro, instead of being a national problem.

The change of understanding was recorded last Friday (23), in the international system of the entity, used to record cases of zoosanitary information. With this change, the criterion recommended by OMSA is not to purchase products from the area located within 10 km around the farm where the case was identified.

The decision was made after analyzing technical measures taken by the Brazilian government to control the risks of the outbreak. “The geographical indication of this event was modified from ‘event occurs in the country’ to ‘event occurs in zone’, after sending additional information throughout Brazil,” says OMSA, in its report.
