The country’s weather agency noted that the tremor can cause some sea level fluctuations along the back of the region, although it considers that there is no risk of tsunami
A 6.1 magnitude earthquake on the Richter scale hit the east coast of the island of Hokkaido on Saturday, without any tsunami warning and no damage has been reported so far. The tremor took place at 5:37 pm (local time, 5:37 am), with epicenter at a depth of 20 kilometers under the sea bed, on the coast of the city of Kushiro, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA).
The earthquake has reached in several municipalities in eastern Hokkaido the 4 magnitude 4 on the Japanese scale, with a maximum of 7 and this magnitude is based on surface tremor and affected areas, not the intensity of the tremor. JMA has observed that the earthquake can cause some fluctuations at sea level along the coasts of the region, although it considers that there is no risk of tsunami. Hokkaido authorities reported that they did not receive any reports of damage to the areas most affected by the earthquake.
