With signaling, the electricity will have an additional R $ 4.46 per 100 kWh consumed
The (National Agency of Electric Energy) reported on Friday (30.MAI.2025) the activation of the Red Flag on level 1 for June. The cost of energy for consumers will be additional $ 4.46 per 100 kWh consumed. The electricity bill will be more expensive. Read the statement (PDF – 304 KB).
The agency said it took the measure because of the “Low -average influential scenario throughout the country indicated by ONS (National System Operator)” which projects reduction of hydroelectric generation and increased cost of generation by the need to drive more costly energy sources, such as thermoelectric plants.
The increase in electricity bill has a direct impact on Brazilians’ pockets and inflation by affecting the production chain. It is a negative news for the president’s government (PT). The reflection in the MP that is uncertain.
In May, the flag was on the yellow level. Before, the green flag was in force.
The change in the tariff flag affects all consumers connected to the SIN (National Interconnected System). According to Aneel, in addition to reflecting the actual costs of power generation, the change to the red flag also acts as an alert for the population to use electricity more consciously.
The tariff flag system has been implemented to signal consumers the effective costs of power generation in the country. When generation conditions become more costly, as in the present case, extra charge is automatically applied to power invoices.
There is still no forecast on how long the red flag will remain active. This will depend on hydrological conditions and energy demand in the coming months.
Understand
The tariff flags are classified by colors that indicate the different generation conditions.
- green flag means condition favorable of power generation, therefore, there is no extra cost;
- Yellow Flag means condition less favorableTherefore there is an increase of R $ 18.85 per MWh used —or R $ 1.88 per 100 kWh;
- Red flag level 1 indicates condition unfavorablewhich implies $ 44.63 per MWh used —or $ 4.46 per 100 kWh and;
- Red flag level 2, which indicates condition very unfavorable, With an increase of R $ 78.77 per MWh used —or R $ 7.87 per 100 kWh.
The mechanism of tariff flags acts as a financial compensation system. When it rains little and hydroelectric dams produce less energy, it is necessary to trigger thermoelectric plants, which have higher operating costs. To pay for these plants, Aneel triggers the yellow, red 1 or red flags 2, with extra rates on the electricity bill.
