The Young Birch Festival is an event that takes place, among others in Wolin, and more specifically in the center of the Slavs and Vikings. In 2025 he will be celebrated there on June 7 and 8. It is then that there are a lot of rituals that come from the beliefs of our ancestors. However, you do not have to participate in this holiday to independently carry out a small ritual that can bring a lot of happiness.
The Young Birch Festival comes from the former The Slavic rite of worship Mokosza, the exact date on which it was celebrated is not set. Most often it was the end of May and the beginning of June. Our ancestors believed in the power of trees – the Holy Gaje were important centers of worship, in which, among others Marriages were concluded and prayers were erected. During the Young Birch Festival, many rituals associated with this tree were celebrated. It was the time in which the wreaths were danced, and also wishes were written on the bark – It was believed that placing requests on birch branches could help them come true.
It was a holiday dedicated to the goddess Mokoszwhich patronized fertility. Birch, according to the beliefs of the Slavs, was a divine tree (next to the oak), she was planted at the graves of the dead and believed that she became a shelter of the soul. Therefore, She was hung at home. Sometimes individual branches were enveloped in marital wreaths. Birch was also recognized as an amulet that was supposed to protect against spells and evil spirits. She became a tree of eternity, life and purity for the Slavs.
