Consumers will pay an additional R $ 4.46 for every 100 kilowatt hours (KWh) consumed; measure was taken due to the reduction of rainfall and decrease in power generation by hydroelectric

The electricity bill will be more expensive in June. Aneel (National Electric Energy Agency) announced on Friday (30) that the Red Tariff Flag level 1 will be applied next month. This means that there will be an additional $ 4.46 charge for every 100 kilowatt hours (kWh) consumed. The decision was made due to the reduction in rainfall and the consequent drop in power generation by hydroelectric dams, especially in the Southeast and Midwest, which concentrate about 70% of the country’s water storage capacity.

With reservoirs at lower levels, it will be necessary to trigger thermoelectric plants, which produce energy at higher cost. According to Aneel, the climate scenario has been getting worse since February, with rain below the historical average. Reports indicate that storage levels can drop from 69% from April to 55% to October. Given this, the agency considers extra charge necessary, which serves to cover the highest costs of generation and also as a warning for conscious use of energy.

The red flag level 1 replaces the yellow flag that was in force in May. Prior to that, the favorable generation conditions allowed the application of the green flag, without additional charge. Aneel’s tariff flag system is used to reflect, directly on the electricity bill, the actual energy production costs in the country. The less favorable the conditions, the greater the tariff charged to the consumer.
