After March’s protests, the Turkish court released 14 young people from custody.
On Friday, the Turkish court ordered to release 14 young people who are prosecuted for the alleged insult of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan during the March protests to support the imprisoned mayor Istanbul Ekrema Imamogl. According to the AFP report, TASR reports this.
Many of these young people are less than 20 years old. The prosecution of Imamogl met with sharp criticism of the opposition, human rights organizations and international observers who blame Erdogan’s government for abusing justice to shut down political rivals.
Imamoglu, who was considered to be Erdogan’s main rival, denies the accusations. However, as a result of criminal prosecution, the University of Istanbul has taken him an academic degree without which he cannot stand in the presidential election. These will be held in 2028.
According to the opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP), more than 300 young people have reached pre -trial detention as a result of participating in protests. Many of them are accused of participating in illegal meetings. The courts released most of them in April, taking into account the fact that many of them would be an obstacle to their studies.
