Disinformation on social media is a serious risk of security, as the Austrian Armed Forces writes in his “Risk Bild 2024”. Fake news campaigns are used as a strategic weapon to split democratic and pluralistic societies and to shake trust in politics, media and state institutions. Due to the rapidly developing AI models, the problem is likely to worsen, malicious actors can now create deceptively real-looking texts, images and videos at the push of a button and bring them into circulation via social media, where they can hardly distinguish users from real information.
