Ibiza limits the number of cars for tourists to protect the island from overloading and maintain its sustainability.
Authorities on the Spanish Island of Ibiza have begun to limit the number of incoming cars and caravans. The measure was introduced for a high number of tourists. According to official statistics, the number of vehicles on the island over the past two decades has four times four times from 51,000 in 2002 to 207,000 in 2022. From June 1 to September 30, the number of vehicles used by non -residents is limited to 20,000 a day, explained the local government for the local daily El Periodico de Ibiza Y Formentera.
Restrictions for rental
Of this number, there are up to 16,000 cars from rental companies available on the island. The rest of the quota is designed for private cars that can reach the island by ferry. Caravans must be demonstrated by booking in the camp and can only be parked in the places set. Restrictions do not apply to motorcycles.
Prime Minister Vicnek, Prime Minister, explained to the newspaper that the aim of this measure is to “guarantee the sustainability” of the island, where about 150,000 people live, but is visited annually by approximately 3.6 million tourists. Mari said that various interest groups operating in Ibiza, including companies renting cars, have resisted restrictions.
On the neighboring smaller island of Formenter, the authorities already limit the number of vehicles. They plan to introduce a similar measure to Mallorca.
