The Constitution and Justice Commission (CCJ) of the House of Representatives approved a bill that prohibits the dissemination of images of victims of crimes or accidents, both by persons and by means of communication, including the Internet.

The only exception is when press vehicles disclose public interest information.

The approved project brings together other ideas of similar projects, with changes made by the rapporteur, Deputy Diego Coronel (PSD-BA).

Anyone who disseminates images that show or identify the victim without the consent of her or his legal guardian can take one to three years in prison. The rule applies to living or dead victims.

The rapporteur stated that the goal is to combat “criminal sensationalism”, that is, the use of shocking and disrespectful images that help nothing in resolving the case.

According to Diego Colonel, showing these images only exposes even more people who are already in a situation of pain and vulnerability.

Now the project is still voted on in the House plenary. If approved, you will still have to go through the Senate before it becomes law.
