It smells gently, overflows with colors and looks as if it has emerged from the illustrations of the old British book. Summer garden in English style is not only about flowers, but it is a place where romance, careless beauty and a piece of nostalgia are mixed. Everything blooms with a matter of course, while it is a thoughtful concept. Whether you have a large garden or just a corner at the cottage, the English style will teach you to look at plants with other eyes.
Summer gardens in English style are like another world. It looks free, casual and yet like a fairy tale – in colors, smells and details. Who wouldn’t like to have a piece of such a romantic corner at home? And yet it is not such an unattainable dream. Even in Czech conditions you can create a floral oasis that resembles an old English farmhouse. Just know a few rules, not to be afraid of colors and let go of flowers from rows.
“The concept of English gardens began to spread in the eighteenth century and replaced the French Gardens full of perfection and geometry. On the other hand, the English gardens depict a prevailing view of nature, they are ruled by irregularity, asymmetry and organic shapes,” says garden architect Tomáš Biba.

Apparent negligence is important
The basis of the English garden is apparent negligence. Nothing is exactly symmetrical, ornamental flower beds resemble a painting palette and the vegetables are calmly mixed with flowers. This spontaneous charm is the reason why so many people around the world like the English style. The summer season is ideal for him – flowering roses, flames, coneflowers, lavender or tacks, and in the garden it buzzes, smells and lives.
To get started, forget about exactly cut lines. Instead, create rich mixed beds along the paths, around the house or even around the old bench. Let the flowers overflow over the frames and play with heights. It is the contrasts between the gentle lower perennials and upright plants such as recruitment, spurs or fensions, forming the right effect.
The main role is 100 % rose
Roses play a major role here – ideally old varieties with narcotic scent, which can be folded on pergola or wooden fence. For example, you can add daisies, poppies, sage or peas. Do not forget the herbs. Rosemary, thyme or mint not only smell beautiful, but give the garden another dimension. And if you have a corner where nothing goes well, try dwarf types of shrubs or creeping roses.
One of the important elements of the English garden is also equipment. Wooden benches with patina, metal tables with peeling paint, terracotta pots or old watering cans will find their place. Thanks to them, the garden looks cozy.
The English style is unpretentious at the core, does not require exaggerated interventions or constant cutting. Rather than accuracy, it is an atmosphere and joy. In the summer, moreover, a few sunny days is enough to turn the garden into a blooming dream that attracts a cup of tea between roses.
