The liberal and proeuropeistic candidate Rafal Trzawski, current mayor of Warsaw, advances this Sunday in the second round of the Polish presidentials, according to the first polls at the foot of the urn after the closing of the electoral colleges at 9:00 p.m. (19.00 GMT).
The survey made by Ipsos places the candidate backed by the government of Prime Minister Donald Tusk less than one point ahead of his rival, the nationalist Karol Nawrocki, with 50.3% support compared to 49.7%.
A second OGB urn foot survey for Republika TV also grants Trzawski an advantage although lower, specifically 50.17% compared to 49.83% for Nawrocki in the elections, in which the estimated participation stood between 71.2% and 72.8%.
If his victory is confirmed after the scrutiny of the votes, Trzaskowski would happen to the outgoing president, Andrzej Doubt, which exhausts the two consecutive mandates that the Constitution allows.
The president in Poland has limited powers compared to other countries, but has the right of veto on legislative initiatives, although they have been approved by Parliament (SEJM), a prerogative that has doubted frequently.
Donald Tusk’s government coalition, which came to power in 2023, does not have a sufficient parliamentary majority of three fifths to cancel the presidential veto.
The victory of Trzawski, candidate of the ruling civic coalition (KO), would eliminate all these obstacles and allow the Polish Executive to advance with its ambitious reform program and accelerate its progressive and proeuropea agenda.
“The president of all Poles”
“We have won!”, Hightest Trzawski himself said as soon as the forecasts of the polls at the ballot boxes, according to the Gazeta Wyborcza. Besides, He pointed out that he will be “the president of all Poles”
Meanwhile, Nawrocki has assured for his part that “he is going to save Poland.” “We are not going to allow Donald Tusk to rule badly, without worrying about public finances, which moves our great dreams and aspirations away,” he argued. “We have to win tonight and we know that we are going to win,” he said.
