Senator Rogério Marinho was the last person heard in the STF; The parliamentarian was nominated to speak in defense of Bolsonaro and General Braga Netto, former minister of the Civil House
The minister of the Federal Supreme Court () ended on Monday (2) the phase of the testimonies of witnesses of prosecution and defense of the defendants of core 1 of the coup plot. The group is formed by the former president and seven other defendants. The testimonials began on May 19th. 52 witnesses were listened to by the Attorney General’s Office (PGR), which makes the accusation, and the defenses of the accused.
Senator Rogério Marinho (PL-RN) was the last witness heard in the STF. The parliamentarian was nominated to speak in defense of Bolsonaro and General Braga Netto, former minister of the Civil House and presidential candidate on the Bolsonaro plate in 2022.
Testimony
During the testimony given today, Marinho denied that Bolsonaro and Braga Netto signaled or commented that they would take some measure of institutional break after the 2022 elections outcome. The senator also denied that he is aware of some fact that connects the former president to scammers from January 8. The parliamentarian attended meetings with Bolsonaro during the transition period to the Lula administration.
“I saw the worried president that there would be no blockade of radicals, impediment to come and go, so that it was not placed on him to hinder the economy and change in the country,” he said.
According to the senator, Bolsonaro was sad to have lost the election and indicated the then Minister of Civil House Ciro Nogueira to head the transition process with representatives of the transition government. “We were all sad, but the president,[estava] Concerned about this transition process and the pronouncement to its voters, ”he added.
Next Steps
With the end of the witnesses’ testimonials, the interrogation of Bolsonaro and the other defendants was scheduled for next Monday (9). The trial is expected to decide on the conviction or acquittal of the former president and other defendants to take place this year. In case of conviction, the penalties are 30 years in prison.
Defendants are responsible for crimes of armed criminal organization, attempted violent abolition of the democratic rule of law, coup d’état, damage qualified by violence and serious threat and deterioration of listed assets.
Nucleus 1
The eight defendants make up the so -called crucial core of the coup, nucleus 1, and had the complaint unanimously accepted by the first class of the STF on March 26. They are:
- Jair Bolsonaro, former President of the Republic;
- Walter Braga Netto, army general, former minister and vice presidential candidate on Bolsonaro’s plate in the 2022 elections;
- General Augusto Heleno, former Minister of the Institutional Security Office;
- Alexandre Ramagem, former director of the Brazilian Intelligence Agency (Abin);
- Anderson Torres, former Justice Minister and former Security Secretary of the Federal District;
- Almir Garnier, former Navy Commander;
- Paulo Sérgio Nogueira, Army General and former Defense Minister;
- Mauro Cid, whistleblower and former joint of Bolsonaro’s orders.
