The UN General Assembly has the fifth chairing woman in its history. The German ex -minister plans to modernize the UN structures and address the key questions of the 21st century.
On Monday, the UN General Assembly elected former German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerback as her chair. The forty -four -year -old politician won 167 out of a total of 193 votes in New York, reports TASR according to DPA report.
Baerback has applied for a one -year function, which is mainly ceremonial importance and consists mainly in the organization of plenary sessions. DPA recalls that it should not be confused with the position of UN Secretary -General Antónia Guterres.
The election at the plenary session of the 193 UN Member States was considered a formality, but a secret vote was made for Russia, writes DPA. This is the fifth woman as the President of the General Assembly since the founding of the UN almost 80 years ago.
Mandate will take up in September
Annalena Baerback will take the office on September 9, shortly before the UN General Assembly annual meeting. The German politician expressed gratitude for her election, stating that she wanted to become an “honest intermediary” for the General Assembly, the German station DW said.
“The UN is needed more than ever before,” said the former Green Party politician, adding that it will emphasize that it will emphasize the adaptation of the organization of the 21st century, for example by reforming its structures to reduce costs and increase efficiency, writes Euronews. Baerback also stated that she would put great emphasis on taking into account the views of all regions and groups and paying special attention to the climate crisis.
Germany, which was the task of nominating the candidate for the meeting in the years 2025 – 2026, chose Baerback instead of Helga Schmid, an experienced diplomat, which was originally considered. The election has triggered controversy in Germany, added Euronews.
