Let’s imagine an idyllic summer afternoon at rest on the terrace. The flowers smell, the sun shines, there is a cold lemonade in the glass. Suddenly we hear unpleasant and strong buzz. It’s not a bee – what circles around our head is a huge hornet. Unfortunately, the truth is that it is often our ourselves.
Without realizing it often, we attract ourselves with our decision to close the house or on the garden terrace. Some of the plants we love literally act as a magnet that they cannot resist. So if we do not want the presence of hornets to happen only a matter of time, it is time to get to know their favorite plants and keep them away from our walls.
Useful and dangerous creatures
Horing is an important part of the ecosystem – they hunt some pests and participate in the pollination of plants, but their close flights around our dwellings are unpleasant and potentially dangerous. The hornet sting is painful, it can cause an allergic reaction and repeated stings are particularly risky for children, or people with weakened immunity or resistance to substances that insert the hornets into the body. What attracts them and what should we rather deny? Especially sweet scents and nectar!
Schedule your garden
Horry, as well as bees and other pollinators, are attracted by plants with rich nectar and distinctive flowers. If we do not wish to have these uninvited guests directly at the entrance or windows, it will be good to consider whether such plants prefer not to go to another corner of the garden.
Beware of ivy
It does not have to be just plants with large colorful flowers. Literally irresistible is the ivy for example for the hornets, which, especially at the beginning of autumn, offers (not only) this insects the last tempting sweet feast. The house wrapped in such a magical plant is certainly beautiful, but also in its essence dangerous.
Large flowers – more hornet
They also like to feed on flowers, which are in favor of their size, or they are easily accessible – for example, copper, but also pansies, dahlias, or hydrangeas and other similar plants. Of the herbs, they are irresistibly attracted by both cumin and fennel and other plants from the family of the Miříkovitých family. In this case, however, we can be sure that besides the hornets, such a flower bed will only be teeming with all kinds of insects – whether we wish it or not.
Will also feed on the fruit
In addition to plants, which we certainly do not have to give up, but we should prefer to plant them away from the house, it is also necessary to work on the cleanliness of the land. Horing, but also wasps and other similar creatures, also attract fallen sweet fruits that begin to ferment. Their sweet juices are such a strong attraction that you can organize a real garden party for insects. There will be only lanterns.
Will you share the garden with them?
Let’s not let the garden pick up with hornets. In this struggle for our own territory, we will only win by prevention, which was discussed in previous paragraphs, but also by regular cleaning, or the choice of later varieties of fruit that these flying scarecrows do not attract so much. But when it occasionally appears in the garden and it is really just a moment, it can be a good choice. After all, we are the same part of nature as other creatures. Let’s try to share the planet, even if it should be our own land.
