Diplomats discussed the situation of the war and exchanged opinions about proposals for a political solution of the conflict
Russia’s Foreign Minister, spoke by telephone on Sunday (1) with the US Secretary of State, about the resumption of negotiations between Russia and Ukraine, scheduled for Monday (2) in Istanbul, Turkey. The information was released by the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and reflected by state agencies in the country, such as TASS.
According to the official statement, the two diplomats discussed the situation of the war and exchanged opinions about proposals for a political solution of the conflict. The resumption of dialogue occurs after a first round considered poorly productive, held on May 16, also in Istanbul.
The conversation occurred on the same day as Ukrainian forces performed a drone attack on Russian military aviation bases, in one of the wider actions of this kind since the beginning of the war. According to the Russian government, Lavrov and Rubio had maintained other telephone contacts in recent weeks. Last Wednesday (29), the Russian minister said that his country was preparing for the meetings of this new negotiation stage. Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky defended on Sunday a “complete and unconditional ceasefire”, proposed still rejected by Kremlin.
During the phone call, Rubio also expressed condolences by civilian rail accident victims in Russia, caused by the collapse of bridges on Saturday night (31). Seven people died, according to Russian authorities, who investigate episodes as possible acts of terrorism.
