Norwegian chess Magnus Carlsen lost the sixth round of Norway Chess, a tournament held in Norway between May 26 and June 7. Carlsen was defeated by Gukesh D, world chess champion.

Carlsen’s reaction at the end of the match caught the eye. The Norwegian punched the table, dropping pieces, before greeting Gukesh and raising quickly. Watch the video:

Carlsen’s anger is justified: Gukesh was completely lost after the 31st starting movement, with a 4.0 advantage for Carlsen in the background analysis – supercomputer that analyzes the duels in real time.

Gukesh, however, managed to slowly decrease Carlsen’s advantage and went into a completely winning position in the 52nd movement, with the Indian with a 4.0 point advantage in Stockfish.

Carlsen’s withdrawal, followed by the rabies’ breach, came after the 62nd movement, when Gukesh had a mate in 12 in the match.

Despite the setback, Carlsen is the leader of Norway Chess, with 9.5 points tied with Fabiano Caruana. Gukesh rose to third place with 8.5 points.

The last places are with Arjun Erigaisi and Hikaru Nakamura, both with 7.5 points, and the flashlight is with Wei Yi, with 6.5 points.

How does Norway Chess work?

Norway Chess is a traditional 10 round chess tournament. Each victory in the classic game – 120 minutes format for each player with an increase of 10 seconds the departure of the 41st movement.

Victory in classic format gives 3 points to the winner, with the defeated not punctuating. In case of a tie, the match for an Armaggedon: the white pieces has 10 minutes, with blacks having 7, with an increase of 1 second per movement from the 41st bid. If Armaggedon ends tied, the black pieces chess player is given as a winner.

Those who earn at Armaggedon receive 1.5 points, with the defeated with 1 point.

Norway Chess has been played since 2013, with 12 editions so far. The biggest winner is Norway Magnus Carlsen with six titles. Sergey Karjakin is the only other athlete with more than one achievement: he won the first two editions.

Veselin Topalov of Bulgaria, Armenian Levon Aronian, Fabiano Caruana and Hikaru Nakamura, both from the US, earned once each.
