Senator Renan Calheiros (MDB-AL) informed the Federal Supreme Court (STF) that he has no interest in a conciliation process for a criminal complaint presented by Federal Deputy Arthur Lira (PP-AL). Renan pointed out that the two are “declared political opponents” and that therefore conciliation would be “fruitless.”

The complaint was filed in 2023, after Renan claims that Lira “privatized Maceió City Hall” and that the former mayor “benefited directly from the secret budget” and “used many municipalities, unfortunately, to launder money.” The deputy said he was the target of slander, defamation and injury.

The Attorney General’s Office (PGR) suggested a conciliation hearing, a possibility provided for in the Code of Criminal Procedure.

Last week, however, Renan’s defense claimed that “the plaintiff and the defendant are declared political adversaries, resulting in unsuccessful conciliation if the hearing is designated.”

Previously, the senator’s lawyers had already requested the rejection of the case, claiming that the lines are protected by parliamentary immunity. Lira’s defense claimed that immunity should not be applied in the case because there is no relationship with the senator’s mandate.

The complaint was initially filed in the Federal Court of the Federal District, but was sent to the STF. The rapporteur is Minister André Mendonça.
