Mass protests in Serbia do not cease. After the roof has collapsed in Novi Sad, demonstrators ask for early elections.
Thousands of people again protested on Sunday in more than thirty Serbian cities in an effort to bring pressure on President Aleksandar Vučič to announce early elections. According to the AFP report, TASR reports this.
Protests in Serbia began in response to the collapse of the superstructure above the entrance to the railway station in the town of Nový Sad in November 2024, which claimed 16 victims of lives. A large part of the protesters on Sunday in 34 Serbian cities consisted of students chanting shouting “We want elections”. Demonstrators in Belgrade marched to the two main bridges in the city and blocked them. In Novi Sad, people marched to a station where the accident took place last year.
Disputes over students’ requirements
When the protests began at the end of last year, students demanded a transparent examination of the roof collapse and prosecution of those who attacked demonstrators in the subsequent protests. They also want the allegations to be withdrawn from arrested students and examine the alleged use of the sound cannon on the protest in March this year. At the beginning of May, students began to demand early parliamentary elections. In the meantime, Vučič has repeatedly declared that he no longer wants to deal with students’ requirements for early elections.
According to a public opinion poll published at the end of April, Crta, which hills to students, is supported by 59 percent of respondents in Serbia. The authorities question this figure. Recent protests have already led to the resignation of the Prime Minister and the fall of the government.
