The Ukrainian president, Volodimir Zelenski, announced Monday since Vilna, after the meeting between Moscow and kyiv delegations in Istanbul, which there will be a new exchange of prisoners after the exchange of 1,000 captives from each party that was agreed on May 16 in the Turkish city and materialized a few days later.
“The conversations in Istanbul have ended and I am waiting for the full report of the Minister (of Defense, Rustem) Umérov. They have exchanged (Russians and Ukrainians) documents through the Turkish part and we are preparing a new release of prisoners of war,” said Zelenski at the end of a summit of the northern flanks countries and this one of the NATO to which he had been invited
The Ukrainian president has insisted on the need for more hard additional sanctions against Russian energy exports and in particular against the sale of crude oil by Moscow if these new contacts in Turkey mediated by the Ankara government do not produce progress towards a negotiated end of the war.
“We need to work in joint sanctions at the level of the industrialized countries) G7,” said Zelenski, who has explicitly mentioned the importance of the US – who since the arrival at the White House of President Donald Trump has not approved new punitive measures against Russia – be among those who sanction the Kremlin.
During his speech, Zelenski has advanced without giving details that NATO countries represented in the meeting have committed to send new military aid packages and continue to finance the production of weapons in Ukraine.
The Ukrainian president has referred to – in which, according to kyiv, more than 40 Russian combat aircraft parked in air bases of the Russian rear – as an example of how “modern war” should be reached with drones.
Russia and Ukraine have ended this afternoon after just over an hour to the second round of peace negotiations in Istanbul. The parties agreed to meet again in the future to continue the conversations.
The previous round, which was also held in the Turkish city on May 16, had extended for three hours and resulted in a exchange of 1,000 for 1,000 prisoners of war.
The main objective of this Monday was the exchange of memorandum on the peaceful arrangement of the conflict and the conditions for a high fire.
The head of the Turkish diplomacy, Hakan Fidan, was in charge of starting the match, which took place at the Ciragan Palace, an old Ottoman palace converted into a luxury hotel. “We believe we will make the most of this opportunity,” he said and added that “everyone is observing” negotiations. Fidan stressed that “the determination of (President Donald) Trump in (achieving peace has opened a new window of opportunity.”
