The president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva said on Tuesday (3) that the Minister of Finance, Fernando Haddad, had no problem rediscreeing the decree that raised tax rates Tax on Financial Operations (IOF)adding that a new proposal will be discussed later at a lunch at the Dawn Palace.

“At no time did companion Haddad have any problem to rediscuss the matter,” Lula told a press conference in Brasilia.

“The presentation of the IOF was what they thought at that moment. Then if someone with a better idea appears and he will argue, let’s argue,” he added.

He also said that there could have been a discussion about the decree before the announcement, but he does not understand that there was an error in the process, arguing that the Ministry of Finance is making an effort to “give tranquility” to the Brazilian people.

Earlier, Haddad said he will meet on Tuesday afternoon with the president to present structural measures in the fiscal area that he classified as lasting solutions for public accounts.

The minister stated that the measures are supported by the commands of the House of Representatives and the Senate, noting that the decision on the subject should be made public “in a few hours”.

According to the minister, the package involves at least one proposal for amendment to the Constitution (PEC) and a “relatively broad” bill, as well as a possible provisional measure to adjust topics that need to take effect immediately.

The government announced at the end of May the IOF elevations about a series of currency, credit and private pension operations. The measure generated strong political reaction, was partially reversed, but still faces resistance, which led the economic team to analyze alternative actions.
