Former President of Argentina says he will try a vacancy as a provincial deputy; was convicted of corruption in 2022
Cristina Kirchner has confirmed that she will apply for the position of Provincial Deputy in Buenos Aires. Condemned for corruption in 2022, former Argentine president and former president spoke about her candidacy during a rare media appearance. She gave an interview to the channel C5n On Monday (2.Jun.2025). The information is from the newspaper.
The former president will run for a place in the 3rd electoral section, one of the 8 sections in which the province of Buenos Aires is divided. Each electoral section encompasses several municipalities.
A ThirdAs it is known in the political environment, it is famous for being a stronghold of Peronism. It includes 19 municipalities in the Metropolitan Region of Buenos Aires and has almost 5 million voters. Most districts are ruled by peronists. According to the Argentine newspaper, in some of them, these candidates get over 70% of the votes in the elections while their competitors do not reach 15% of preferences.
Kirchnerism has won in the electoral section since 2005, even in the face of nationwide defeats. In 2009, for example, Nestor Kirchner lost in the provincial total, but won in this section. The standard was repeated in 2013 and 2017. Since 1987, Peronism had only less than 1 million votes in the region on 3 occasions: 1991, 2001 and 2003.
For the first time, the elections will be held on two distinct dates. On September 7, voters will choose representatives for provincial positions. Already the vote for national positions, which include 35 deputies, will be held on October 26.
The division of the election in two parts was announced a few weeks ago by the governor of the province of Buenos Aires, also peronist Alex Kicillof, former minister of the government of Kirchner. Although he is appointed as former president’s political godson, Kicillof currently faces a moment of tension with Kirchner for the leadership of the political field.
Condemnation for corruption
Cristina Kirchner was 6 years in prison by the country’s Federal Court in 2022, but is still awaiting a position of the Supreme Court, as the former president requested the nullity of the sentence.
Cristina and her husband, Nestor Kirchner – who died in 2010 – were accused of corruption for allegedly favoring businessman Lázaro Baez in public works in the province of Santa Cruz during the first 3 mandates of the Kirchners (2003–2015).
