President said he believed that the monetary authority will “take a correct attitude” soon; rate is 14.75%
The President (PT) said this Thursday (3.Jun.2025) that the BC (Central Bank) will download “Soon, soon” the basic interest rate. According to him, the monetary authority will take a “right attitude”.
“We are aware that inflation is controlled, the price of food has begun to fall and soon, the Central Bank will take a correct attitude to start lowering interest. They are very high,” he said. The president’s speech was at a news conference to journalists at the Planalto Palace. Watch (in 1h2min):

The speech of the petista, however, goes contrary to the statement of BC president Gabriel Galipolo. The discussion about downloading Selic is not “In the debates of the Monetary Policy Committee”these.
Galipolo said that even with lags, the BC trusts that the current interest rate will be effective.“If we put the interest rate on a level that understands as restrictive, we know it is a medicine that will work. It has its lags and we want to communicate how this lag will occur over the coming months.”.
In May, the BC raised the Selic rate to 14.75% per year, the highest level since 2006. The decision was motivated by persistent inflation and expectations that exceeded the 3% official target tolerance interval, ranging from 1.5% to 4.5%.
