Dozens of musicians, writers, actors, doctors and academics launched a petition on Monday to demand an “urgent position” of the Assembly of the Republic for the recognition of the State of Palestine by Portugal.
The perpetrators of the petition intend that Portugal recognize the state of Palestine, joining the 149 countries that have already done so, such as Spain, Brazil, Norway, Sweden or Angola.
The petition also argues that the Portuguese State “commites to the deliberations of the International Criminal Court, namely, supporting the fulfillment of warrants of capture” against Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, former Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant.
It also urges Portugal to prevent “the transit and the overflow of military material for Israel in Portuguese territory or Portuguese territorial waters” and to defend the adoption of these measures and positions with other countries and relevant international institutions and, in particular, with the European Union.
Among the dozens of personalities that promote this petition are figures of the academic world as António Sampaio da Nóvoa, Júlio Machado Vaz or Maria de Lourdes Rodriguesor culture, such as Ana Bacalhau, Capicua, José Eduardo Agualusa, José Luís Peixoto, Valter Hugo Mother, Sérgio Godinho or Rui Reininho, among other areas.
In the release text of the petition to the Assembly of the Republic, prosecutors point out that they follow “with growing concern the aggravation of human rights violations and international humanitarian law, crimes of war and the escalation of civilian violence in Gaza and the West Bank.”
“The petitions do not admit to being silent or passive witnesses of these crimes. By condemning them, they recall decades of violence and humiliation against the Palestinian people,” read.
For prosecutors, the “recognition of the state of Palestine by a large number of countries is today an effective way in the diplomatic plan to demonstrate solidarity with the Palestinian people and to press the Israeli government to end the escalation of violence against Gaza and West Bank populations.”
