Os They began to vote on Tuesday (3, local date) to elect their new president and end six months of political chaos caused by the failed attempt by the former chief of imposing martial law. The center-left candidate Lee Jae-Myung leaves as a favorite in this single-shift election against conservative Kim Moon-Solo. The electoral sections opened at 6:00 am (18h00 on Monday in Brasilia) and will close at 20h00 (08h00 on Tuesday), when the first polls of ballot box will be released. Asia’s fourth largest economy has been through a period of political instability since early December, when conservative Yoon declared the martial law for a few hours and sent the army to the opposition national assembly.

Since this episode, there have been several internal presidents. Yoon was suspended, accused of an insurrection, arrested after weeks of resistance and, finally, deprived by the Constitutional Court. Research points as a favorite opposition leader Lee Jae-Myung. The former 61-year-old and leader of the Center left Democratic Party would have 49% of the votes, according to a recent survey by the Gallup Institute. Behind him, with 35% of the voting intentions, the former Labor Minister Kim Moon-Soo of the Popular Power Party appears to which Yoon belonged.

The country of 52 million inhabitants, which moved to a democratic regime in 1987, was strongly polarized by the political crisis of martial law, which, according to analysts, will be decisive in the vote. The future president will face a growing economic crisis, one of the lowest birth rates in the world and the increased cost of living. It will also have to deal with the threat of an unpredictable, nuclear arsenal North Korea and the dispute between the United States, guarantee of its safety, and China, its main commercial partner.
