Spain canceled the mission on rocket systems, diverting from Israeli military technology.

Spain canceled an agreement on anti -tank missile systems to be produced by a subsidiary of an Israeli company in Madrid, the Ministry of Defense reported on Tuesday. Madrid is trying to move away from Israeli military technology, TASR writes, according to AP report.

The Spanish Government’s decision lifted the license for 168 anti -tank -controlled Spike LR2 shots at an estimated value of approximately EUR 285 million. According to the media there, these systems would be developed in Spain by PAP Tecnos, a subsidiary of the Israeli company Rafael Advanced Defense Systems based in Madrid.

Departure from Israel

“The goal is clear … Complete diverting from Israeli technology,” spokeswoman of the Spanish government told journalists Pilar Alegríová, adding that its representatives are investigating the “consequences of abolition”.

The Israeli Ministry of Defense referred to Rafael’s decisions. She told the AP that she did not know about the cancellation of the contract. Pap Tecnos did not comment immediately.

Political context

Spain approved an agreement on the production of anti -tank missiles on October 3, 2023 – four days before the Hamas militant attack to Israel, which triggered a war in the Gaza Strip. At that time, the authorities argued that the systems used by the Spanish armed forces are outdated and should be replaced by more modern ones.

The Spanish government claims that on October 2, 2023 it stopped exporting weapons to Israel. However, there are reports that some shipments have reached the country.

Spain formally recognized the Palestinian state in May 2024 along with Norway and Ireland.
