The São Paulo government signs on Thursday (5) a memorandum of understanding with the World Biogas Association (WBA), an organ of the London-based biogas industry to implement policies to accelerate the development of the sector in the state.
“This signature represents another important milestone in strengthening the biogas industry in our state and reflects São Paulo’s commitment to sustainable innovation and the global agenda of climate change,” he said.
“Through collaboration with WBA, we hope to add efforts and gain efficiency to boost public policies and initiatives that expand the production and use of biogas and, creating a conducive environment for new business opportunities and job and income generation,” he added.
In São Paulo, about 80% of the biomethane production potential comes from sugar and ethanol plants, from vinasse, one of the waste generated in the process. Biomethane is obtained by purification of biogas and can replace the natural gas used in industries and vehicles, contributing significantly to decarbonization.
The Secretariat of Environment, Infrastructure and Logistics (Semil) also launched, in partnership with the Secretariat of Economic Development and InvestSp, the mobile version of the Conecta Biometano SP platform.
The application was created to facilitate the connection between biogas and biomethane chain representatives in order to make new projects viable.
Sector agents may register, including biomethane producers, traders, service providers, equipment suppliers and banks that fund these projects.
A FIESP study, in partnership with semil, pointed out the potential for the generation of up to 20,000 direct jobs in the biomethane chain, and contributes to the reduction of greenhouse gases.
