Every year, the small town of Gloucestershire in the UK turns on the stage of one of the world’s most eccentric competitions: the cheese race. This year, the highlight was the German Tom Kopke again, who, for the second consecutive time, crossed the goal in the first place, taking home the coveted Double Gomester cheese.
At 23 years old and content creator on YouTube, Tom was one of many adventurers who shot themselves in the steep Cooper’s Hill, trying to reach a 3 kg cheese wheel that goes down the hill at great speed. The slope is such that participants can rarely stand up, starring inmarous falls-part of the charm and madness of the event.
Despite the chaotic character of the race, which has already taken dozens of people to the hospital in previous editions, this year there was only one injured in need for medical care. A surprisingly low number, taking into account the history of the race.
Tradition remains alive, mixing adrenaline, humor and some degree of recklessness. For many, more than the award, what counts is the unique experience of shooting hill below… a cheese.
It also has the best tumbles of this year’s edition.
