A video picked up by a tourist on Mount Etna in Italy is circulating on social networks and shows the dramatic moment when several visitors flee in panic from the cloud of smoke caused by a sudden eruption of the volcano. The images record the desperation of climbers while the dense column of smoke stands in the sky of Sicily.
The eruption, which took place last Monday, was considered one of the most intense since February 2021. According to the National Institute of Geophysics and Vulcanology, the phenomenon originated in a collapse in the southeastern part of the mountain, about 2800 meters in altitude, generating a mixture of hot and ash gases. Three lava flows even graduated, but have already begun to cool, indicating the end of volcanic activity.
