The Portuguese government announced on Monday, 2, that 33,983 foreigners who expressed interest in residing in the country had their requests denied and will have to leave Portugal in the coming days. Most are Indians (39.6%) and Brazilian (15 8%).

The number of foreigners to be invited to withdraw from Portugal may be even higher in the coming months, as the Portuguese government is still analyzing the remaining requests before the method is extinguished to get fixed residence in the country.

Why will foreigners be expelled?

Until last year, one of the forms that foreigners had to live in Portugal was by the manifestation of interest. That is, the person who was legally entering the country, had a job and was registered and regularized before Social Security could ask the government’s authorization to live definitively in Portugal.

The method, however, was extinguished in June 2024, when there were 440,000 requests of this type pending, and the analysis was handled by the agency for integration, migrations and asylum (AIMA). Since then, the agency analyzed 184,059 housing requests, of which 150,076 were accepted and 33,983, denied.

It is these people, who made the manifestation of interest until last year and had their requests denied, which will be notified to voluntarily leave the country. If they do not depart within the stipulated period, they will later be expelled by the Portuguese Government.
